Electrical Problems Are the Hardest to Diagnose
Mechanical problems usually have clear symptoms. A worn brake pad squeals. A bad water pump leaks. Electrical problems are different. A short circuit can drain a battery overnight with no obvious cause. An intermittent sensor failure can trigger a check engine light that comes and goes. A corroded ground connection can cause half a dozen seemingly unrelated symptoms.
Electrical diagnosis requires a methodical approach and the right equipment. Steve uses a digital multimeter, an oscilloscope for waveform analysis, and a professional scan tool that reads live data from every module on the vehicle. He does not guess. He tests.

Parasitic Draw Diagnosis
If your battery keeps dying overnight and the alternator tests fine, something is drawing power when the car is off. Finding a parasitic draw requires systematically isolating circuits until the culprit is identified. Steve has the equipment and the process to track these down.
Short Circuit Diagnosis
A short circuit causes fuses to blow repeatedly. The fuse is protecting the circuit, but the underlying short needs to be found and repaired. Steve traces the wiring to find where the insulation has failed or where a wire is contacting ground.
Sensor Diagnosis and Replacement
Modern vehicles have dozens of sensors. Oxygen sensors, mass airflow sensors, crankshaft position sensors, camshaft sensors, throttle position sensors. When one fails, it often triggers a check engine light. Steve tests the sensor and replaces it if it is out of spec.
Wiring Repair
Damaged, corroded, or chewed wiring (rodents are a real problem in rural areas like Fallbrook and Pauma Valley) can cause all kinds of electrical problems. Steve repairs wiring using proper splice connectors and heat shrink, not electrical tape.

A dead accessory, a window that stopped working, or a component that just quit can often be traced to a blown fuse or a failed relay. Steve checks the fuse box and relay panel and replaces the faulty component.
Ground Connection Repair
Corroded or loose ground connections are one of the most common causes of mysterious electrical problems. A bad ground can cause dim lights, erratic gauges, hard starting, and a long list of other symptoms. Steve checks ground connections as part of any electrical diagnosis.

Something is drawing power when the car is off. This is called a parasitic draw. Common culprits are a module that is not going to sleep properly, a stuck relay, or an aftermarket accessory that was wired incorrectly. Steve can track it down with a current clamp and a process of elimination.
Because the underlying problem was not fixed. Clearing a code removes the light but does not repair the fault. The system runs its diagnostic checks, detects the same problem, and turns the light back on. Steve diagnoses what is actually causing the code, not just clears it.
Intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose because the fault has to be present to be found. Steve uses a scan tool that can record live data and capture fault codes as they happen. Sometimes it takes more than one visit to catch an intermittent problem. He will be honest with you about that.
