Replace Them Before They Leave You Stranded

A broken timing belt or a burst radiator hose will stop your car immediately. These are cheap preventive repairs. Steve comes to you and handles them before they become emergencies.

Preventive vs. Emergency

Belts and Hoses Are Cheap to Replace. Waiting Is Not.

Belts and hoses are rubber components that degrade over time from heat, age, and use. They do not give much warning before they fail. A timing belt that breaks at highway speed can destroy an interference engine in seconds. A burst radiator hose dumps your coolant and can cause an overheating event that warps the head.

The good news is that these failures are almost entirely preventable. If you know when the belts and hoses were last replaced and you stay on schedule, you will almost never have one fail on the road. Steve checks the condition of belts and hoses during any service visit and tells you where things stand.

Belt and Hose Services

Timing Belt Replacement

The timing belt keeps the engine's valves and pistons in sync. Most manufacturers recommend replacement between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. On interference engines, a broken timing belt causes immediate and severe engine damage. Steve replaces the timing belt along with the water pump, tensioner, and idler pulleys as a complete kit.

Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, and water pump. When it breaks, all of those systems stop working at once. Signs of a worn serpentine belt include squealing, visible cracking, or fraying on the edges. Most last 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

Drive Belt Tensioner and Idler Pulleys

The tensioner keeps the serpentine belt at the correct tension. A failing tensioner causes belt slippage and noise. Steve replaces the tensioner and idler pulleys when replacing the serpentine belt, since the labor is already done and the parts are inexpensive.

Radiator Hoses

Upper and lower radiator hoses carry coolant between the engine and radiator. They degrade from heat and pressure over time. A hose that feels soft, spongy, or has visible cracks should be replaced. Steve checks hose condition during any cooling system service.

Heater Hoses

Heater hoses carry hot coolant to the heater core. They are smaller than radiator hoses but fail the same way. A leaking heater hose can cause coolant loss and overheating. Steve replaces them when they show signs of wear or when they are leaking.

Timing Chain Service

Many modern engines use a timing chain instead of a belt. Chains last longer but can stretch and cause timing issues. If you are hearing a rattling noise on startup or the check engine light is on with timing-related codes, Steve can diagnose whether the chain needs attention.

Common Questions

Belts & Hoses FAQ

Steve can tell you when he looks at your vehicle. Generally, if your owner's manual has a timing belt replacement interval listed, you have a belt. If there is no such interval, you likely have a chain. You can also look it up by year, make, and model. If you are not sure, ask Steve when you call.

Yes. Timing belts do not show symptoms before they fail. They look fine and then they break. The replacement interval is based on age and mileage, not on how the car feels. On an interference engine, a broken timing belt means a destroyed engine. The belt replacement is a fraction of that cost.

On most vehicles, yes. Steve has the tools to do timing belt jobs on-site. Some vehicles have more complex setups that require additional equipment, but the majority are doable in a driveway. He will tell you upfront if your vehicle is an exception.
