Charging System Problems Fixed At Your Location

Car clicks but will not start? Battery keeps dying overnight? Steve diagnoses the charging system and replaces what is actually failing.

Diagnose First, Replace Second

The Battery, Starter, and Alternator All Look the Same When the Car Won't Start

When a car will not start, most people assume it is the battery. Sometimes it is. But a car that clicks rapidly when you turn the key usually has a dead battery. A car that clicks once and nothing happens is more likely a starter problem. A car that starts fine but the battery warning light is on or the battery keeps dying is probably an alternator issue.

Steve tests all three components before recommending a replacement. He uses a load tester and a charging system analyzer to get actual numbers, not guesses. If the alternator is putting out 13.8 to 14.7 volts under load, it is fine. If it is dropping to 11 volts, it is failing. You get a real diagnosis, not a parts swap.

Starter vs. Alternator: What Each One Does

The Starter

The starter is an electric motor that cranks the engine when you turn the key. It only runs for a second or two, but it draws a lot of current. Starters fail from heat, age, and wear on the brushes and solenoid. When a starter fails, the engine will not crank at all. You may hear a single click, or nothing.

Signs of a failing starter: single loud click when turning the key, grinding noise during startup, intermittent failure to crank, starter that spins but does not engage the flywheel.

The Alternator

The alternator charges the battery while the engine is running and powers the electrical system. When it fails, the battery drains and eventually the car dies, even while driving. Alternators fail from worn brushes, bad diodes, or a failing voltage regulator.

Signs of a failing alternator: battery warning light on the dash, battery that keeps dying, dimming headlights while driving, electrical components behaving erratically, burning smell from the engine bay.

Common Questions

Starter & Alternator FAQ

On most vehicles, yes. Some starters are buried under intake manifolds or in tight spots that make them difficult, but the majority are accessible without a lift. Steve will tell you upfront if a particular job is not practical on-site.

The simplest test: jump start the car and disconnect the jumper cables. If the car dies shortly after, the alternator is not charging the battery and is likely the problem. If the car runs fine after a jump, the battery may just have been drained. Steve can test both with proper equipment and give you a definitive answer.

Grinding during startup usually means the starter drive gear is not engaging the flywheel cleanly. It can be a worn starter gear or a damaged flywheel ring gear. Steve can diagnose which one is the problem.
